Maurice Ndatabaye was born in Congo in 1985 as the eldest of six children, with two sisters and four brothers. Due to insecurity in the region where he lived in Congo, at the age of 9, he and his family moved to Rwanda seeking peace after the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi had ended.
In Rwanda, Maurice completed his primary, secondary, and university education. During secondary school, he was frequently expelled for failing to pay school fees because his parents were unable to afford them, as they were unemployed at the time. One day, while at church, a fellow congregant offered to pay his school fees, allowing him to study diligently and excel.
